It Gets Even Better

Bathroom Designs
Bathroom Designs are an important consideration because the bathroom is a room you will spend a reasonable amount of time in each day. A large range of design types are available and limited purely by your taste and budget. We won’t go into all of the different design types and concepts here but we’ll try breaking up the categories a little differently to help you decide which path you want to follow.
Modern Designs
Terms such as modern and contemporary don’t have much meaning attached to them other than describing what designs are currently being used and this varies greatly. Many people stating that they want modern are simply asking for the same thing as what most people have. To quickly summarize what this means:
- Minimalist Design
- White or Neutral Colours
- Linear Feature Tiling
- Frameless Designs
- High Contrast Highlights
This style of design is relatively inexpensive, functional and does not require a large amount of design thought. It will look impressive and spacious especially when there is no framing of sinks, showers and other accessories. Larger tile size will also create a feeling of more space. With the exception of certain luxury homes, the bathroom is the smallest room in the house and a feeling of space is important and one of the main driving factors of modern bathroom design.
Natural Stone Designs
Natural stone can create a feeling of elegance that is unmatched and can create a feeling of luxury. Natural stone can be worked in with elements of modern design to create something a little better than ceramic or porcelain tile. Using marble or travertine is roughly 3 times the cost of using ceramic or porcelain. Remember that ideally you would use natural stone throughout the entire bathroom to create an effect and because natural stones vary so greatly in colour. This could include the vanity bench top, sinks and any storage. Textured feature tiles in this design type are also great. Black granite vanity tops are a popular feature and can be very striking in contrast with a lighter coloured bathroom.
Bad Bathroom Designs
While good designs can be relatively hard to define because they are so wide and varied, it is easier to point out what things are bad and unpleasant in interior design. The first thing to know is that unless Elvis is still alive and you are hoping to attract him to your house then you should stay away from the retro style of design.
Things to avoid:
- Checkered Tiles
- Pink, Lime Green and Low Contrast patterns and Highlights.
- Floral and Marine Patterns
Why avoid these things? Simply put that unlike clothing styles from 50 years back, the person wearing a retro fashion will be very different and potentially trendy. Using bathroom designs from the last 50 years will not be different because there are many homes out there still using these bathroom designs. By doing this you simply liken your house to an old house that has not been renovated, and that’s not different or trendy.
Wood-Centric Designs
Much like stone, the use of wood in a bathroom can create a classic look but also a modern look. Wood is a building material that has simply never been out of style. Darker woods are commonly used in vanities to create a striking look. Lighter coloured woods can also be used for this purpose but the effect will be less striking. An example of good use for pine could be in something bold like a mainly dark/black bathroom look with lighter pine highlights. This look could be achieved at low cost as well.
There is generally a strong trend back towards using natural materials in modern interior design. Stone and wooden flooring is in huge demand for those able to afford it. Wooden flooring is an option for bathrooms but there are special considerations to be made if implementing this due to the fact the bathroom is a wet area.
Role-play Bathrooms
This is a category to include all the bathrooms out there that are themed on a special interest. These would include Old World, Ancient Oriental, Ancient European, Fantasy, Space- Age, Cyberpunk, Art Nouveau, Victorian, and nearly every other genre that exists. The bathroom can be an excellent place to create a place of escape from the world. Specialist designs can be achieved by clever placement of furniture and ornaments but to achieve a deeper and more convincing effect then the services of an interior designer or architect will be required.
Hopefully this has helped you to think about the design that is best for you. The next step is to request some free quotes from local renovators and we’ll match the right people with you.
